London Congestion Charge:

Transport for London (TfL) levies a Congestion Charge of GBP 5.00 (excluding tax) per day for driving in Central London Mon-Fri 0700-1830 hrs, excluding Public Holidays. From 4 July 2005, the Congestion Charge will be GBP 8.00 (excluding tax) per day. Full details including charges and maps can be found on the TfL Congestion Charging website at www.cclondon.com

Hire cars are not exempt from the Congestion Charge and it is your responsibility, including visitors from abroad, and not Hertz to register the vehicle you are driving on a central database and to pay the charge each day you travel within the charging zone.

If you are renting from our location inside the zone, Russell Square, Hertz pays the first day's charge and bills it on your rental agreement. Extra days are your responsibility.

Cameras read the vehicle number plate as you enter or drive within the charging zone and match it with the database. Once the number plate is matched, showing you have paid the charge, the details are wiped off the computer at the end of each day.

The Congestion Charge can be paid any time up to 22.00 hrs on the day of your journey in the charging zone. If the charge is paid between 22.00 hrs and midnight on the day of your journey, an additional GBP 5.00 surcharge will apply. If the charge is not paid by midnight on the day of your journey, a Penalty Charge will apply (see Tfl website). This penalty will be reduced if you pay within 14 calendar days from the date on the notice, but increased if you do not pay within 28 calendar days.

***Hertz will not accept liability for these charges***

Charges can be paid daily by cash, cheque and credit or debit card at selected retail outlets including post offices, petrol stations and nominated pay points. You can also pay by credit or debit card on the Tfl website or by calling within the UK 0845-900-1234.

Payment Methods:

Cash: The minimum age for cash rentals is 25 years. Cash is accepted as a method of payment from Monday to Friday between 0900 and 1700 and for vehicle groups Mini 2 and 4 Doors (A), Economy (B) and Compact 4 Doors (C) only. It is not permitted on Bank Holidays. The vehicle must be returned during office opening hours. You must present a driver’s licence with your current address and a second form of ID which must not be more than 3 months old to prove this address. The second form of ID can, e. g., be a utility bill, bank statement, credit card statement, council tax invoice etc. This list is not exhaustive. Please check with the rental location if in doubt. Non-UK residents have to produce a passport and a return flight ticket. Cash payment is not allowed on rentals outside the UK and deliveries. CDW and TP are mandatory if cash is the primary method of payment. Super Cover is not available on cash rentals. Additional drivers are not allowed if the only method of payment is cash. A deposit based on the estimated cost of rental including additional charges (insurances, surcharges, special equipment etc.) plus one tank of fuel will be applied to the rental. The minimum deposit is GBP 500.00. At the end of the rental it is not always possible to refund the deposit in cash. In these circumstances you will be sent a cheque made out in GBP. This normally takes 7 to 10 working days.

Personal cheques are accepted as cash if accompanied by a cheque guarantee card. Only one cheque is accepted per rental. Post- or pre-dated cheques are not accepted.
