Top Attractions Within Oldham City

Oldham City is a charming town in Greater Manchester, with a total of 103.544 residents, according to the 2001 census. Oldham was part of Lancashire and rose as a settlement in the 19th century as the international center of textile manufacture. Oldham was the town where the Industrial Revolution first took place. At a certain point, Oldham produced more cotton than France and Germany. Currently, the town is residential and an important center for education and arts. The features that distinguish Oldham from other cities is the architectural skyline: tourists can see even today the cotton mills and the other buildings associated with the Industrial Revolution. Oldham provides generous accommodation: luxury hotels, affordable motel rooms and old fashioned cottages or B&Bs. The venues here are also varied: restaurants, take-aways, coffee shops and pubs.

Oldham Town Hall is a wonderful Georgian neo-classical town hall built in 1841. Unfortunately it is not available for visitors, because the building is in a very bad condition: the roof is about to fall, the inside is rotting. Plans have been made to restore it, but no course of action has been taken so far. Still, it is one of the most beautiful landmarks in Oldham.

Oldham War Memorial was erected as a memorial to the men who were killed in the First World War. The monument is made of a granite base and on top, there is a bronze sculpture depicting five soldiers making their way through the trenches and it embodies the fighting spirit of the army.

Oldham Civic Center houses the local government. It is a wonderfully build structure, with 15 storeys of white brick. The most impressive structure is the tower which stands over 200feet high. The Civic Center can be seen from any place in town.

Oldham is a wonderful city, with plenty of attractions to see: buildings and parks, a well designed network of public transportation and is bound to make an impression during your visit here. Do not hesitate to spend here a weekend or a short holiday.
