Karlsruhe is one of the biggest cities in the southwest of Germany and located near the French-German border. Karlsruhe was founded in 1715 as Karlsruhe Palace, when Germany was a series of principalities and and city states. The town surrounding the Palace became the seat of two of the highest courts in Germany. Karlsruhe is very similar to Washington DC. Both cities have a centre, in Karlsruhe the palace and in DC the Capitol Building, from which the streets radiate outward. Much of the central area, including the palace, was reduced to rubble by Allied bombing during World War II, but was rebuilt after the war. Karlsruhe has many cultural and historic attractions and landmarks that are worth visiting.

The Botanischer Garten Karlsruhe is a municipal botanical garden located in the centre of the city. The garden was established by Charles III William, Margrave of Baden-Durlach and designed by Carl Christian Gmelin. Between 1853 and 1857, three plant houses were created. The collection of plants is impressive: camellia, cactuses, palm trees, tropical plants and several rare trees from the 19th century amid newer plantings.

Karlsruhe Palace was erected in 1715 by Charles III William of Baden-Durlach, after a dispute with the citizens of his previous capital. The first building was constructed at the beginning of the 18th century, and it was originally partially made of wood and stone. The palace has large windows doors, pavilions, wings and a cupola. Even if the palace was bombed by the Allies, it was quickly rebuilt after the war, and is still one of the landmarks of Karlsruhe.

The StadtGarten is a recreational area in Karlsruhe near the main railway station and was rebuilt in 1967. It is also the site of the Karlsruhe Zoo, where both children and adults can see a wide range of animals. The zoo was opened in 1865 and is one of the oldest zoos in Germany. It has about 800 animals and 150 species.
