Potenza is a beautiful city and commune in Italy, located more exactly within the region of Basilicata (formerly known as Lucania), in the Potenza province, being the capital of the province and the region at the same time. The history of Potenza goes back to the Roman times, when the first settlement was probably located at a lower elevation than it is now. Currently, Potenza is the highest regional capital and one of Italy's highest provincial capitals, overlooking the valley of the Basento river. According to the 2009 census, Potenza has a total population of 68,608 residents and spans on a total area of 67 square miles (173 sq km).
