Montijo is a municipality in Portugal, located more exactly within the Lisboa region, in the sub-region Peninsula de Setubal and the Setubal district. The history of Montijo goes back to the paleolithic times, as archaeological evidence show. However, Montijo was not officially established until the 16th century. Until 1930, was known as Aldeia Galega. After being elevated to city status in 1985, its name was changed to Montijo. Montijo has developed significantly throughout the years, especially in the 18th century, when agriculture and fishing started to lose terrain to commerce and industry. According to the 2010 census, Montijo has a total population of 40,199 residents and spans on a total area of 116 square km.
