Denia is a city in the province of Alicante, Spain on the Costa Blanca halfway between Alicante and Valencia, the judicial seat of the comarca of Marina Alta. As of 2009, Denia had a population of 44.464 residents. There is evidence of human habitation in the area since prehistoric times and there are significant Iberian ruins on the hillsides nearby. Denia became the capital of a taifa kingdom that reigned over part of the Valencian coast and Ibiza. In the 13th century, the town was captured by the Christians, thus causing a decline for the city. In 1803, Denia gained an increasingly important role as trading port.

Denia Castle

This is probably one of the most famous landmarks in the area. The castle is located on a rocky crag overlooking the city. It was built in the 11th and 12th centuries and it offers extraordinary views of the city, the sea and the surrounding area. Within the castle, there is also the Palau del Governador with its own museum.
