What Is the Speed Limit in the UK?

speed limits

When you drive your car rental in the UK, there are important things you need to keep in mind and laws you need to abide by. Did you know that in the UK, speed limits are measured in miles per hour? If you are used to driving in kilometres per hour, this is something you will need to adjust to quickly as there is a big difference between the two.

1 mile = Approx. 1.6 kilometres

When you are in the UK, in most cases, speed limits will be as follows:

  • In built up areas: up to 30 mph, unless stated otherwise
  • Single carriageways: 60 mph
  • Dual carriageways: 70 mph
  • Motorways: 70 mph

Keep in mind that if you are driving a motorhome, mini bus or any vehicle that is over 3.05 ton, speed limits are as follows:

  • In built up areas: up to 30 mph, unless stated otherwise
  • Single carriageways: 50 mph
  • Dual carriageways: 60 mph
  • Motorways: 70 mph

Always remember that the speed limit is the absolute maximum and does not mean it is safe to drive at that speed irrespective of conditions. Driving your hire car at speeds too fast for the road and traffic conditions can be dangerous.
