Taking Your Rental Car From Mainland UK to Republic of Ireland?

Travelling from Mainland UK to Republic of Ireland in a Rental Car

Most car hire companies will allow your rental car to be taken to the Republic of Ireland, but it may also depend on the pick up location and the vehicle type you've rented. Other important details such as several people travelling in the vehicle and names of all drivers are also compulsory. To help you understand the process of driving a rental car across the border in Ireland, VroomVroomVroom has put together a brief guide.

Will I be allowed to take my rental car from Mainland UK to Republic of Ireland?

Most car hire companies will allow you to cross the border from the UK Mainland to the Republic of Ireland. You will need to pay a cross-border fee and may also be required to take out additional insurance cover.

Vehicles are allowed to be taken to the Republic of Ireland, although the vehicle must be returned to the territory where it was rented.

There is a charge of £125 per rental to take the vehicle to Ireland.

Make sure to contact the local branch prior to collection of the vehicle to arrange this. 48 hours notice is required to take a vehicle cross border.

Continental Cover must be purchased if you plan to cross the border from UK Mainland to Republic of Ireland.

Continental Cover provides you with a Green Card to drive your rental car around Europe and to show that appropriate third party liability insurance is in place.

You can pay for this protective cover when you collect your hire vehicle.

You'll need to take out Continental Cover before you can cross into Republic of Ireland. Continental Cover provides the necessary documentation to prove insurance cover.

Vehicle must be returned to UK Mainland or additional one way charges will apply.

Contact the branch 5 days prior to travel for details and to arrange. Details such as number of people travelling in the vehicle, names of all drivers and countries to be visited are mandatory.

Charges: 1-7 days £90, 8-14 days £126, £15-21 days £156, 22-28 days £216. Charges include VAT and exclude any additional premium location fees that may be applicable.

Vehicles may be taken to Ireland but renters will be required to purchase the Europdrive Package.

The Europdrive Package is only available to purchase at the counter and applies to vehicles going to the Republic of Ireland also.

Any vehicle rented (irrespective of insurance cover) requires written permission from Europcar by means of obtaining a completed VE103 form prior to departure.

Vehicles may be taken to the Republic of Ireland by paying a foreign use charge but must not leave the island of Ireland.

Additional equipment may be required for vehicles being taken out of the UK mainland to meet the legal requirements of the country visited. Renters are responsible for purchasing this additional equipment.

Should these restrictions be ignored, all insurance (third party liability, CDW, TP, PI), if accepted, shall be deemed, null and void.

Vehicles may be taken to the Republic of Ireland by paying a foreign use charge but must not leave the island of Ireland.

A written permission issued by the Sixt branch is mandatory to cross the border.

For the written permission a charge of 12.00 GBP per day/ 20 GBP per month applies.

If vehicles leave the island of Ireland a fine of 500.00 GBP applies.

All cars (other than Prestige & Luxury models) are allowed to be taken to the Republic of Ireland.

A provision of vehicle documentation legally required (form VE103, which indicates approved drivers and limit of countries to be visited) and European breakdown cover.

There is a mileage limit on rentals during which the vehicle is driven overseas. 1 - 6 days 200 miles per day 7 days 700 miles per week 100 miles per additional day.

Any miles driven in excess of these limits will be charged at 15 pence per mile (including VAT) at the end of the rental.

Important:

Before you take your rental car across the Republic of Ireland border…

Make sure to check this with your rental car company. Only standard vehicles (with the exception of Prestige & Luxury models) may be taken to the Republic of Ireland. Please also note that additional equipment may be required for vehicles being taken out of the UK mainland to meet legal requirements. Should you ignore these restrictions, all insurance, if accepted, shall be void. You will be held fully responsible in case of accidents and will bear all consequences, including the cost of repatriation of the damaged vehicle.
