St Quentin is a commune in Aisne department in Picardy in northern France. It has been identified as the Augusta Veromanduorum of antiquity. The town is named after St Quentin, who is said to have been a martyr here in the 3rd century. St Quentin was founded by the Romans, in the Augustean period to replace the oppidum of Vermand as the capital of Viromandui. St Quentin received the Roman name in honour of the Emperor Augustus. During the Middle Ages, a major monastery developed, based on the tomb of St Quentin, a former Roman Christian who came to evangelise the region and was martyred in Augusta,m giving rise to a new town which was named after him.
