Besancon is a beautiful city located in eastern France. Situated in the Franche-Comte region, Besancon has an area of 25.12 square miles and a population of more than 117,500 residents, according to the 2008 census. Besancon has actually been the first green city of the country. In 1986, Besancon has been named a Town of Art and History, and since 2008 the city has also been introduced on the UNESCO world heritage list. The Jardin Botanique de Besancon is a great botanical garden located in the French city. Admission is free in this natural venue, so you can visit it anytime you desire. This is the first botanical garden established in the area, dating back to 1580. Here, you will be able to visit more than 5,000 species of plants, collections including carnivorous plants, orchids and roses, but also medical plants.

The Museum of Fine Arts and Archeology hosts a wonderful collection which actually dates back to 1694. This is the oldest public museum in France. In this Besancon cultural venue, you will be able to visit archeology, painting and drawing collections. Mummies, prehistoric collections of objects, but also medieval statues can be admired in this spot.

The Palais Granvelle was built in Besancon between 1534 and 1540. However, this is just one of most impressive historical buildings of the city. Since 2008, the building has been listed as one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Old military architecture can be seen here, but also a cylindrical tower, dating back to the 15th century. Currently, the building hosts the Museum of the French Resistance and Deportation, featuring some fascinating exhibits.
