Douai is a great commune in France, located more exactly within the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, in the Nord department, on the banks of the River Scarpe, being a sub-prefecture of the department at the same time. Douai's belfry is one of the most impressive belfries of France. The belfry in Douai was constructed in early 1380, on the site on an earlier former tower. The construction is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture. It is 80 meters high and consists of 62 bells spanning 5 octaves. This local monument is clearly worth visiting.

The Chartreuse Museum (Musee de la Chartreuse) is housed in a former Carthusian monastery which dates back to the 16th century. The museum puts on display numerous art works by French and Dutch artists, including an amazing collection of Italian Renaissance pictures, as well as prehistoric and Gallo-Roman antiquities. The Church of St-Pierre is located adjacent to the museum and contains a wide array of pictures.

The Summer Festival is one of the most popular events that take place in Douai. The festival is held every year in early July and it honors the man who supposedly freed Douai from besieging Normans at the end of the 9th century. The festival is very popular and gathers thousands of people who come here to enjoy the numerous entertainment options.
