Founded in 1866, Monte Carlo has a name of Italian origin meaning Mount Charles, in honour of the then-reigning prince, Charles III of Monaco. The specific mountain is the escarpement at the foot of the Maritime Alps on which the town stands. Monte Carlo is also known for the Circuit of Monaco, on which the Formula One Grand Prix takes place. Monte Carlo Casino is a gambling and entertainment complex located in Monte Carlo, Monaco. It includes a casino, the Grand Theatre de Monte Carlo, and the office of Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. The casino has facilities to play a variety of games which include: different kinds of roulette, stud poker, blackjack, Trente et Quarante, craps, baccarat, video poker and slot machines.

Napoleon Museum is located in Monaco, near Monte Carlo, that hosts artefacts which once belonged to the French Emperor Napoleon I. The collection contains numerous possessions of the Emperor including letter and documents pertaining to his reign and conquest of Europe and relics from his exile and imprisonment on Saint Helen. The museum is very interesting, since it provides a different insight on the big man.

Oceanographic Museum in Monaco, near Monte Carlo, is a wonderful and impressive architectural work that has a monumental façade above the sea. The museum is home to exhibitions and collections of various species of sea fauna, such as starfish, seahorses, turtles, rays, sharks, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, etc. For many years, the director of the Museum was the oceanographer Jacques Yves Cousteau.

Cathedrale Saint Nicholas is a wonderful and impressive building, built in 1857, and is on the site of the first parish church in Monaco built in 1252 and dedicated to St. Nicholas. The cathedral has become famous for Grace Kelly being buried here.
