Bad Hersfeld is the district seat of Hersfeld Rotenburg district in Northeastern Hesse, Germany. Bad Hersfeld lies in the Fulda Gap, a historical avenue used for armies of the past. Bad Hersfeld is known countrywide above all for the Bad Hersfeld Festival, which has taken place each year since 1951 at the monastery ruins. These ruins are said to be one of the biggest Romanesque church ruins. The history of Bad Hersfeld goes back to the 8th century, when the monk Sturm established a monastic settlement. Recent diggings have shown that Bad Hersfeld has a longer settlement history going back to the New Stone Age.

The Bad Hersfeld Town Museum is housed in the only wing of the former monastery complex that is still preserved, south of the ruins themselves. Besides the departments for town and monastery history, the department for town handicrafts is also worthy of mention.

Haus Mährisch Schönberg is another great place in Bad Hersfeld where visitors can get a glimpse of the culture, history and civilisation of the town. The Museum shows the local history collection from the formerly district of Landkreis Mährisch-Schönberg, that consists in a wide variety of artefacts, clothes, newspaper articles, jewellery and other items.

Kurnpark is a wonderful venue in Bad Hersfeld, that has a spa with a spa house, a pump room and a spring pavillion, where visitors can relax and enjoy a great time. Near the spa, there is the Leonardt-Müller-Anlage Park, that has a wonderful perennial plant garden. Here, visitors can walk in the park or relax and enjoya good book on one of the many benches.

LullusFest is a well known festival in Bad Hersfeld. It is one of the oldest folk festival, held every year in the week in which 16 October falls. The festival is a wonderful opportunity to taste many of the local food specialities and drink the famous German beer. There is also the traditional German band, with men dressed in lederhosen.
