Eschwege is a German city in the Werra Meissner Kreis district, Kassel region and in the Hesse state. In our times, Eschwege has an area of a little over 63 square kilometers and a population of nearly 20,000 residents. Eschwege is also the seat of the district. The city was mentioned in documents for the first time in 974, as Eskinivvach, meaning in the old Germanic language "settlement near the ash trees that stand by the water".
