Apparently, two brothers fell in love with the same girl. They lived in a nearby castle and she in another. The brothers did not talked to each other about their feelings and when one of them married the girl, the other killed him. As a sign of remorse, he built the church on the exact place where his brother died. When the building was finished, a spring appeared in the church, as a sign of forgiveness.

Burg Stein, Bosselstein or Altes Schloss are the names given to the Old Palatial Castle of Idar Oberstein. It was first mentioned in 1197 and in the 15th century became an important part of the fortification of Idar Oberstein.
