Kaldenkirchen is a village in North Rhine Westphalia in Germany, situated close to the Dutch border at Venlo. For the first time, the place names Caldenkirken appeared in a document dated 1206. Until 1794 the city belonged to the Duchy of Juelich. Some inhabitants of Kaldenkirchen belonged to the 13 German families who were members of the Religious Society of Friends and Mennonites. During the Second World War, the synagogue was destroyed and during the last weeks, the city was evacuated. In 1947 a fire destroyed 90% of the forest.

The Sequoiafarm Kaldenkirchen is an arboretum that has been used as a biological institute for many years. In the garden, there are more than 1500 giant sequoia. As time went by, the park known as the Sequoia Farm became bigger and bigger, developing into a highly respected arboretum. It has more than 600 varieties of trees and interesting ground flora and is part of the Protected Area of Maas Schwalm Nette. It is a wonderful place that is worth visiting.

The Rococo Pavilion in Kaldenkirchen is one of the finest of its kinds.The gazebo stands on an octagonal plan built in a typical Lower Rhine brickwork. The masonry has a curved, canopy roof that is covered with slate. If you go inside the pavilion, you can enjoy the light entering through the skylight. The pavilion can be visited if tourists make a prior appointment.

Grenzwald is a wonderful forest at the outskirts of Kaldenkirchen, that provides family entertainment. The forest has a wide range of trees and other plant species. There are many hiking and riding trails, as well as many shelters where you can relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery. The forest has got marsh and special habitats for rare plants, such as cotton grass. The fauna is also very diverse, with many species of butterflies and birds. The forest has one of the largest collections of frogs in North Rhine Westphalia.
