Car Hire Verden

Verden is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany, on the river Aller. Verden is the administrative centre of the district of Verden. The town is famous for the massacre of Saxons in 782, committed on the orders of Charlemagne, for its cathedral and for its horse breeding. Until the Second World War, Verden was renowned for its trade and crafts and also its mounted division. During the Nazi Regime forced labourers were used in a furniture factory in Verden. From 1945 until 1993 latterly the 1st Armoured Division of the British Army of the Rhine was stationed in Verden. One of the former British Barracks is now used to house the District administration and a new sporting stadium has been erected opposite.

The Lutheran Cathedral in Verden is a spectacular dome that towers above the pedestrianised high street, with its cafes and shops. This proto cathedral, consecrated to SS Mary and Cecilia, served the former Catholic Diocese of Verden as Episcopal church and was built between the 12th and 15th century. It is a wonderful landmark of Verden that must not be missed if you are in town. Around the Lutheran Cathedral, there is the pedestrian zone and the old quarters, that are very charming. There is also a small park near the cathedral, where you can relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Horse Racing in Verden is another activity the town is famous for. There are horse racing and sport horse auctions and is thus also called the horse riding town. Tourists can even take part in horse racing. It is a wonderful activity that is great for both children and adults.

Historical Museum is located in the old town and is easily accessible. The museum is housed in a former estate. Those who visit the museum should know that there are prehistoric excavations, learning paths, dioramas of the historic city, as well as many historical items. You can take a guided tour. The museum is nicely designed and very appealing.
