Estremoz is a city located in Estremoz Municipality in Alentejo Region in Portugal. Together with the two other marble towns, Borba and Vila Vicosa, Estremoz is internationally known for its fine to medium grained marble that occurs in several colours such as white, cream, pink, grey or black and streaks with any combination of these colours. This marble has been used since Antiquity as a material for sculpture and architecture. The first exports in Roman times were probably for the construction of the Circus Maximus of Emerita Augusta.

Estremoz Castle is an authentic museum which has a range of antique furniture, wall tapestries, iron decorative pieces and porcelain from other times. At the beginning of the twentieth century the grouping of castle, the village walls, the so called Torre das Couracas and the Queen Santa chapel were classified as a National Monument. The Castle is a wonderful place to visit and must not be missed.

Rossio Marques de Pomal is a large unpaved main square in Estremoz, which is a marketplace of huge dimensions surrounded by marble facades of churches, cafes, and the Rural Museum that displays locally produced artefacts. The Saturday market that takes place here is known for its local earthenware pottery and cheese.

Medieval Town of Estremoz is dominated by a 13th century marble tower of 27 metres high, the Torre das Tres Coroas. The tower of the three crowns reminds you of all the kings that Estremoz had. The life of the wife of one of them is depicted in the Capela da Raihna Santa. In the museum of the town of Estremoz you will find a collection of bonecos together with archaeological findings.

Marble Quarries in Estremoz. There are many marble quarries that have already been exploited in the late Middle Ages. The town of Borba is the least visited marble town. It is a quiet little town full of beautiful marble details like marble sills, stairs, window frames, and chimneys.
