Antequera is a charming city and municipality in Spain, located in the Andalusia autonomous community, in the province of Malaga. It is centrally located among Malaga, Seville, Cordoba, and Granada, so it is also known as "the heart of Andalusia". The history of Antequera goes back to the ancient Roman times, when it was known as Antikaria. However, several town sites attest that the area was inhabited long before that. Currently, Antequera has a total population of 45,854 residents, according to the 2011 census, being the most populous city in the interior of the province. It spans on a total area of 314 square miles (814 sq km), making it the largest city in the area.

The Alcazaba of Antequera is an impressive fortress dating back to the 14th century, when it was built to counter the Christian advance over Roman ruins. The Municipal Museum is a great cultural institution in Antequera. It is housed by a palace and contains the Ephebe of Antequera, as well as other artifacts and historical items.
