Avezzano is a town and commune in the Abruzzo region, located in the province of L'Aquila, Italy. It is the main commercial, industrial, and agricultural centre of the Marsica area, with high-tech industries such as a Micron technology semi-conuctor plant, and a large Telespazio satellite farm. Avezzano once lay on the shores of the largest lake in peninsular Italy, Lake Fucino, drained in the late 19th century. Thanks to the wide fields now available for cultivation the area underwent a terrific growth. The town was then completely rebuilt along straight, parallel streets, with wide green areas and fine villas in the Liberty style. Avezzano is a wonderful holiday destination, where tourists can have a lot of fun and visit all the beautiful landmarks.

Alba Fucens was an ancient Italic town occupying a lofty situation at the foot of the Monte Velino, located near Avezzano. It was originally a town of the Aequi, though on the frontier of the Marsi, but was occupied by a Roman colony. The area is known for its preserved fortifications. The external walls, which have a circuit of about 3 km, are constructed of polygonal masonry.

Fucine Lake was a large lake in central Italy, stretching from Avezzano in the northwest to Ortuccio in the southeast, and touching Trasaco in the southwest. In the 19th century, the Swiss engineer Franz Mayor de Montricher was commissioned to drain the lake. A 6.3 km-long and 21 m wide canal was begun in 1862 and within 13 years, the lake was completely drained. Nowadays, tourists can enjoy the beautiful area near Avezzano.

Monte Velino is a mountain in the province of L'Aquila, near Avezzano. This is one of the highest peak in the sub-chain known as Velino Sirente, and the third in the whole Apennines. The massif is included in the Natural Regional Park of Sirente-Velino. The beautiful park near Avezzano is characterised by a rough and desertic appearance, but in fact characterised by a flourishing specialised vegetation. Fauna in the area of Avezzano includes Italian wolf and wild boar.
