L Aquila (L'Aquila) is a charming city and commune in Italy, located more exactly within the Province of L'Aquila, in the Abruzzo region, being the capital of the province and the region at the same time. Forte Spagnolo, locally known as Il Castello, is a massive Spanish fortress dating back to 1534, when it was erected by the Spanish viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo. This Renaissance castle is now home to the National Museum of Abruzzo (Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo), which puts on display numerous historical items and objects related to the history of the area.

Religious sites. As any Italian town, L Aquila features numerous important religious buildings. The most important ones are the 13th century Cathedral of San Massimo (Duomo), the Renaissance church of Saint Bernardino of Siena, and the church of Santa Maria di Collemaggio.

Fontana Luminosa (the Luminous Fountain) is one of the city's best known landmarks. The sculpture is of two women bearing large jars and it dates back to the 1930s. This is a popular gathering place for the people in L Aquila.
