These terms and conditions apply to Europcar rentals in the UK ONLY.

This quote will include:

  • VAT
  • Stamp Duty
  • Collision Damage Waiver. Basic liability cover (CDW) for cars (not specialty cars, 4WD's, luxury models) has an excess of £1,100 (excluding local taxes and surcharges). Vehicle excess can be reduced by purchasing the Risk Reduction Cover upon arrival **except renters from the USA and Canada**
  • Signified mileage amount (generally unlimited, see below for extra mileage charges)
  • Vehicle Registration
  • THW-Theft waiver
  • Vehicle licensing fee
  • Premium location fee
  • Complimentary Breakdown Service

This quote will not include:

  • Price excludes a credit card fee to maximum value of 1.5%
  • Excess reduction cover - Risk reduction cover reduces the damage excess from £900 to £0. Additional insurances and excess reduction available on arrival from £5.00 - £16.67 per day (based on rental length). Details below.
  • Additional Drivers from £13.00 per driver per day with no maximum
  • Age surcharge Young Driver - obligatory for 22-25 Years Old per hire ( £35.00 per day)
  • Extra mileage travel (if your mileage is limited, the limit can not be extended. Each mile will be charged by Europcar from £0.29 per mile (after exceeding the limit). Rentals for 28 days are limited to 2500 miles per 28 day period.
  • Additional Equipment such as GPS* (£13.99 per day), Child Seats* (£11.99 per day), Boosters* (£5.00 per day).
  • One-way drop off charges from £41.67 domestic (conditions below).
  • Any extra charges for "out of hours" pick up and drop offs if applicable (£60.00).

* All extra add-ons under "not included" will attract additional percentage taxes and surcharges.

Europcar Excess Reduction Guide

  • Standard Liability from £900 (excluding local fees and surcharges)
  • Accident Excess Reduction - from £15 per day (excluding local fees and surcharges). This package reduces your liability to £0(excluding local fees and surcharges).

Varies by age of renter, location, type of vehicle and rate. Note: ER does not cover certain loss or damage and cannot be waived in full. Please contact Europcar for further insurance information, specialty cars differ in excess. Subject to the Europcar Terms and Conditions.

Driving Licence

A full and valid driving licence must have been held for a minimum of 12 months. For rentals starting from Plymouth, Exeter, Taunton, Carmarthan, Pembroke, Aberystwyth and Llanelli the driving licence must have been held for a minimum of 2 years prior to picking up the vehicle. 

For UK photocard driving licence holders: With effect from 8 June 2015 the DVLA will cease to issue the paper counterpart to the UK photocard driving licence.  From that date it will no longer form part of a UK driving licence.  Since the introduction of the UK photocard driving licence in 1998 we have used the paper counterpart to validate the driving record of any UK photocard licence holder wishing to rent a car or van from us in the UK. 

After 8 June 2015 there will be the following change to the driver licence information you (or your driver if you are not to be insured to drive the car or van) will need to bring whenever you collect a car or van from us:
  • the UK driving licence photocard of all drivers will continue to be a requirement on each occasion you rent a car or van from us (irrespective of whether it is a UK or a non-UK rental); and
  • instead of the paper counterpart previously required we will need you and/or the driver to provide us with the one-time passcode that can be generated using the new DVLA online service “Share Driving Licence”.  Please note that Share Driving Licence passcodes are valid for a maximum period of 72 hours so you should generate it immediately before picking up the car or van. 
Holders of the old style UK paper licence must also provide a Share Driving Licence passcode together with an additional form of photographic ID which can be a Full Valid Passport, an Armed Forces ID Card or a Police Warrant Card.  No other form of identification will be accepted.

To generate a Share Driving Licence passcode the driver will be asked to supply the following details:

His/her driving licence number
His/her National Insurance number
His/her Postcode

If a driver is unable to obtain a passcode online then s/he should call the DVLA Customer Contact Centre on 0300 083 0013 (Mon - Fri 9am - 5pm).  If this is not possible then, provided the driver brings their National Insurance number with them when picking up a vehicle, we can help them try to obtain the passcode by giving them access to Share Driving Licence

Non UK Driving Licence:

A full and valid driving licence must have been held for a minimum of 12 months.
Licences issued overseas must be clearly identifiable as a driving licence, otherwise an International Driving Licence will be required. Some Licences are only valid in the country of issue e.g. India, so an International Driving Licence is required. A Passport, ID showing home address and proof of entry/exit into/out of the UK (e-tickets acceptable) must also be produced.

UK Nationals residing overseas are advised to use a driving licence of the country in which they reside or they will be subject to the above.

Licence and Fees (LAF)/ Road Tax

​All rentals booked from Monday, 8th of April, 2019 will be subject to a charge of £2.22 per day. ​ 

Deposit Policy

A deposit will be required upon arrival at the rental location which is intended to cover additional rental costs which may be incurred. The deposit amount will be authorised on your credit card or debited from your debit card, whichever applicable, when collecting your vehicle. If there are no additional charges that need to be paid for when you return the Vehicle to us at the end of the Hire Period then the deposit value will be released to your credit card or refunded in full to your debit card or by cheque (whichever applies to the method of payment you used to provide the deposit at the start of the Hire Period). Please note that it may take up to 10 working days for the deposit monies to be available in your credit or debit card account depending on your bank or card provider. A cheque refund will be provided within 8 working days.

If you have prepaid your rental, the deposit amount is calculated as follows: 300 € (or £250).  If you have not already paid for your rental at the time of booking, then the price of the rental will also be authorised on your credit card or debited from your debit card. In this case, the total amount charged will be: Rental price 300 € (or £250).

Please note that this policy is applicable for rentals made in the following countries where Europcar operates its services directly: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and United Kingdom. For other countries, please refer to the country's specific Terms and conditions. 

Late Return Penalty

A penalty charge of £40.00 will apply if a customer returns their car more than 24 hours after the agreed check-in time without advising the branch.

Damage Admin Fee

Minor damages to the vehicle such as scratches or dents will be charged for by the station at time of check-in - such cases will incur a Damage Admin fee of £40.00 on top of the deductible amount (the admin fee may be higher for more serious damages).

Credit Cards & Payments

Cash Deposits are allowed at the discretion of the station manager and with a copy of your passport and airline ticket. Apply at reservation centre. Cash refunds are not normally available and cheque refunds can take up to 28 days.

Cards accepted are: MasterCard, Visa, Diners and American Express.

Age Restrictions

Minimum age for rental 22 years old, there is no upper age limit except at the following locations where the maximum age limit is 75 years: Pembroke, Carmarthen, Plymouth, Exeter, Newquay and Taunton.

21 - 24 yrs = £27.08 per day - NO MAX.

Young drivers are restricted to certain vehicles and the location list below shows the depots served by Europcar that do not accept certain aged drivers:

There is no upper age limit except at the following locations where the maximum age limit is 75 years: Pembroke, Carmarthen, Plymouth, Exeter, Newquay and Taunton.

Please Note: For drivers aged between 22 and 25 (*21-23 years at London Croydon South & **22-30 years at Bradford), MasterCover Plus (Risk Reduction Cover), Peace of Mind and Windscreen & Tyres Waiver cannot be purchased to waive the excess at the following locations: London Lewisham, London Kings Cross, London Fulham, London Marble Arch, London Kennington, London Croydon South* and Bradford**. In these cases the full CDW/DW excess is always applicable. Risk Reduction Cover Plus can not be purchased at any UK location for drivers between the ages of 22yrs and 25yrs.

For drivers aged 22 years old their licence must have been held for a minimum 2 years when picking up at the York location.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

Loss Damage Waiver removes the drivers responsibility to a part of the vehicle in case of damage. CDW is included in the rate and leaves and excess of £1,100 **except renters from the USA and Canada**

Theft Waiver (THW)

Theft Waiver removes the drivers responsibility to a part of the vehicle in case of theft. THW is included in the rate and leaves and excess of £900 **except renters from the USA and Canada**

** for consumers renters from the USA and Canada you can purchase Theft Waiver as a standalone product at a charge of £12 per day for rental of 14 days or less, £10 per day for rentals of 15 days or more.

Windscreen tyres and glass protection

Windscreen tyres and glass protection is not included in the rates it is an optional service which will lower the Windscreen tyres and glass excess to £0. Windscreen tyres and glass protection comes at a cost of £5.00 per day

Risk Reduction Cover

Risk Reduction Cover is not included in the rates it is an optional service and is available for
1-2 days from £12.50 per day,
3-6 days from £11.67 per day,
7-27 days from £9.17 per day,
28 days from £7.50 per day

For drivers aged between 22 and 25 MasterCover Plus (Risk Reduction Cover) cannot be purchased to waive the excess at any UK location. In these cases the full CDW/DW excess is always applicable.

Risk Reduction Cover Plus

1-2 days from £16.67 per day,
3-6 days from £15.00 per day,
7-27 days from £12.50 per day,

For drivers aged between 22 and 25 Risk Reduction Cover Plus cannot be purchased to waive the excess at any UK location. In these cases the full CDW/DW excess is always applicable.

Roadside Assistance Cover (RSA)

For £2.50 ( VAT) per day customers can cover themselves against breakdown recovery costs associated with the following incidents:

1.The cost to replace lost or damaged keys can be up to £500 depending on the make and model of the Vehicle.  An Administration Fee of £40 will be added to the cost of the replacement key.

2.Flat Tyre (Assistance only, not replacement of the tyre)

3.Wrong Fuel or Run out of Fuel (Assistance and tank draining provided the vehicle has not been started, will not cover engine rebuild)

4.Flat Battery (Assistance and new battery if required)

Delivery & Collection

For private customers no Delivery/Collection Service is offered.

One-Way Rentals

Domestic UK Mainland one way rentals are available an extra charge £41.67 applies (not permitted to drop off at Southampton Port), please note one way from mainland UK to Northern Ireland is available and extra charge of £150 applies. One way rentals to St Pancras will attract a charge of £125 VAT.

One way rentals are permitted from any Northern Ireland locations to the following locations in Southern Ireland:- To Dublin = £150.00, To;- Cork, Knock & Shannon = £550.00. People carriers and automatic vehicles are not permitted to be used for one way.


International One-Way Rentals are not allowed.

Overseas cover during the rental period starts from £33.33 per rental.

Cross Border Rentals & Territorial Restrictions

Vehicles may be taken abroad but renters will be required to purchase the Europdrive Package.The Europdrive Package is only available to purchase at the counter and applies to vehicles going to the Republic of Ireland also. Any vehicle rented (irrespective of insurance cover) requires written permission from Europcar by means of obtaining a completed VE103 form prior to departure. Countries which you are allowed to travel to are:

Andorra, Austria, Belguim, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Litchenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Vehicles may not be driven into any countries outside those listed above.

The following vehicles are not allowed to be taken overseas: PDAR, PWAR, LDAR

Please be advised that due to a change in the law in Germany it is mandatory for all vehicles crossing the border into Germany to have winter tyres fitted during the Snow & Icy conditions. Customers will be fined on the spot if they are stopped by police and found to not have the appropriate winter tyres. Europcar UK do not supply

winter tyres and any customer wishing to fir winter tyres must do so at their own cost and ensure

that the rental vehicle is returned in the same condition as supplied without winter tyres.

London Congestion Charge

A London Congestion Charge applies for vehicles entering or moving within the Zone from Monday - Friday between 07.00 - 18.00 - except on public holidays. Charges are £11.50 per day payable either in advance or before midnight on the day of entering the Zone. This charge increases to £12.00 if paid after midnight on the day of entering the Zone and the driver has until midnight on the next charging day to make this £12.00 payment. It is the CUSTOMER'S RESPONSIBILITY to register the rental vehicle and pay the charge. Europcar will not do this on the driver's behalf. Driver's will be liable to pay all penalties or fines related to late or non-payment of this charge plus a £29.38 administration fee for handling the penalty charges.

GPS is available at most location for £13.99 per day to a maximum of £139.90 per rental (£300 Deposit).

Additional Driver

An Additional Driver Surcharge from £13 per day to a maximum of £130 per rental.

Refuelling Charge

All vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel and it is the customer's responsibility to return the vehicle full or pay for any missing fuel at the end of rental. On rentals of 4 days or longer we recommend that you add the cost of a full tank of fuel to our rental charges at time of pick up. This method eliminates the need for you to refuel the tank prior to returning. The fuel amount charged at time of rental will be based on a market competitive price and the car model rented. We are unable to issue a refund for unused fuel. A fuel deposit is not required.

Satellite Navigation Hire Terms & Conditions

When hiring satellite navigation, the unit should be active and ready for use. You will be given the opportunity to inspect the equipment and upon acceptance you agree that the unit and its accessories are in good working order and are free from damage. 1a. We aim to provide You with a good service at all times, however, due to the nature of satellite navigation, it is impossible to provide a fault free service. The quality and coverage of the service is dependant upon various factors and may also be impaired by geographic, atmospheric and other conditions or circumstances beyond Our control. No responsibility will be accepted, or credit given by Us for network transmissions or reception conditions experienced during the rental period. 1b. We will not accept responsibility if the equipment does not use the best route or is not accurate with arrival times or does not get You to Your required destination.

Returning the Equipment

All equipment must be returned to a Europcar Rental Station only.

2a. If the Europcar station is closed on return, the equipment must be placed inside the bag provided and locked inside the boot of the vehicle. The equipment remains in Your responsibility until it is received by the terminating rental station.

2b. A valid Return Receipt is required as proof of return. Inability to provide this documentation will result in the full replacement cost (£244.69) of the equipment being charged to Your credit card.

Lost/Stolen/Damaged Equipment

You must take reasonable care to ensure that the unit is not lost, stolen or damaged. In the event Your equipment is lost or stolen, You will be charged £244.69.

3a. In the event of accidental damage, the equipment must be returned to Us and You will be charged up to £244.69.

3b. You are responsible for the replacement of all accessories should any of them be lost, stolen or damaged. The charges are as follows and are all inclusive of VAT: Windscreen Mounting Bracket £14.69, Vehicle Power Adapter £24.47, Carry Case £24.47.

3c. No waiver purchased from Europcar removes Your liability for lost, stolen or damaged units.


For security purposes, all equipment (including accessories) must be locked out of sight from unattended vehicles. In the event of experiencing problems during Your rental period, contact with Our Customer Service team or Your Rental Station must be made immediately upon detecting the problem. No credit will be given if a call is not made to Us or is not made until after the equipment has been returned.

We reserve the right to revise these Terms and Conditions and any rates at any time. Any changes will be communicated to You. By continuing to use the Service, You will be deemed to have accepted the changes. If the revised terms and conditions are not acceptable, You may terminate the Agreement without penalty. To terminate the Agreement, the unit must be returned to a Europcar Rental Station and a Return Receipt obtained.
