Guide to Frequently Used Car Rental Terms

The car rental industry can be difficult to navigate with so many different terms to describe vehicles, insurance and the rental process. If you are unsure of anything in your car rental terms and conditions, have a look at VroomVroomVroom's guide to car rental terminology. 

A/C

Abbreviation of air-conditioning.

Additional Driver

This refers to any drivers that will be added to the rental agreement in addition to the lead driver.

Airport Surcharge 

An additional daily fee that customers may need to pay if they rent a car from an airport. 

Damage Liability

This refers to the amount a customer will be liable to pay for any damage caused to the vehicle. 

Drop Box

If you are returning a car after hours, you may have to return the keys to a drop box. 

Economy

Refers to a smaller vehicle. 

GPS

Refers to an optional navigation device you can request with your booking. 

Inclusive Rate

This means the rate is inclusive of taxes.

International Driving Permit

Is required in the UK if the customer has a foreign driving licence. 

Power Steering

Is hydraulic/electric assisted steering applied to the vehicle

One Way

A rental car that is being dropped at a different location from where it was picked up. 

Rental Agreement

Refers to the contract between the customer and the car rental company. 

SUV

Refers to a "Sports Utility Vehicle", generally a larger car. 

Transmission

Refers to whether a car is manual or automatic.
